The main thing that intrigued me about the reference for this picture is the way light and shadows play across this woman’s body. I think it’s an excellent example of the power of chiaroscuro, and the interesting interplay between hard and soft shadows on the human figure.

This was the first charcoal drawing I completed outside of college. I never had much faith in the medium during my education, as I’ve always been more of a cartoonist at heart, but I’m glad I took the time to try it again. You could say finishing this picture gave me the boost I needed to make all of the other charcoal drawings available on this website!
